Aiptek MPVR

June 21st, 2006

A few years ago I started playing around with editing video and making DVD’s, mostly of my nephews birthday parties, which you can view here. All the pictures and video have been taken from my Canon s230 Digital Elph, but this year I thought it would be nice to have a video camera for just taking the movie shots. I started looking and I didn’t want an expensive camera that uses tapes or disks, and that is when I stumbled on to the flash memory camcorders. This particular Aiptek model was very inexpensive and comes with many features such as shooting video, taking pictures, recording TV/VCR/DVD/Tivo into MPEG-4, MP3 player, voice recorder, more.

I figured if it took just slightly better movies than my Canon that it would be worth it. The videos work better in natural day light, which is when I use it the most. If has a small internal memory, like 16megs, but I have a 1Gb SD card that holds almost all that I would need, plus I can get a 2Gb card if needed. It is easy to use, light weight, which might have something to do with plastic feel, flash, night shot, stabilizer, and a 2.4″ LCD.

One of the most useful features is being able to transfer my Tivo programs to this device for use on my computer or to burn to a DVD. It has a great picture with what I have test with it. I recorded a little segment of NBC’s My Name is Earl, and it was easy to get it ready for the internet.

Some of the downsides are that there is no case or lens cover, so I will be looking for a carrying case. I might pick up the AC adapter for it so I do not drain the battery while using it in the house. The pictures do not turn out that will because the shutter speed is slow and everything will get blurred if it is not perfectly still. The bright side is that if it is lost, stolen, or broken I am not out tons of money. It is easy to carry around and ready to use at anytime and that is what I like about it.
